CONvergence Online: A Summary

I started writing this on the final day of August 2020’s CONvergence Online. Many online conventions are just finding their feet after COVID forced a mass shutdown of meatspace conventions, and yet I’m finding this very familiar to my longtime CONvergence experience.

I missed a lot of the basic experiences of CONvergence. The chance encounters with other geeks and nerds in the hallways of the Hyatt Regency. The questionable decisions made in hotel rooms. The drinking with other weirdos until the small hours of the morning. All of those were gone in the disease-riddled landscape of 2020. Yet the comraderie, spread between Discourse, Discord, Roll20, and Zoom, was still there. We still connected, we still had some laughs and watched new movies (and bizarre foreign commercials).

It was a good time. In a dark time, finding light is important.

Peace, friends.
